African Festival for French-speakers from Here and Elsewhere

L’Amicale de la francophonie multiculturelle du Manitoba is organising artistic activites aiming to promote African culture such as music, dance, poetry, theatre, movies, literature and workshops addressed to the Manitoba francophone community during the 17th French Language Week .

L’Alliance Française du Manitoba is partner of the screening, on Thursday, March 22nd taking place from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at the Centre Culturel Franco-Manitobain (Pauline-Boutal Room, 340 Blvd Provencher). Admission is free, and the screening will be in French subtitled in English.

The documentary is Barcelona or die by Idrissa Guiro (2007), which received in 2008 the Best Documentary Awards from the Trophées des Arts afro-caribéen Festival  and the Prix Louis Marcorelles from Cinema du Reel Festival.

The documentary discusses the mass exodus of young Africans to the European continent: “In a suburb of Dakar,  passengers are waiting to reach Europe in fragile boats, dealing with the risk of dissappearing under the waters of the Atlantic. The local fishing is in bankrupt or in jeopardy, and the country can’t provide a future for its youth. In every family, someone dreams of going oversea”.

The debate will be led by Mamadou Ka, professor of political science at the University of St. Boniface.
