Farandole: Perspectives on Western Canadian Metis Culture
The Alliance Française du Manitoba, in partnership with la Maison des artistes visuels francophones and Plug In ICA, presents a multidisciplinary creation project on Metis culture. This project, Farandole, includes a contemporary visual art component, a textile art component which explores the expression of traditional culture, and a multimedia component, and involves three artists: Colette Balcaen (MB), Pascal Jaouen (FR) and Sarah Houle (AB). The exhibition’s title refers to a traditional French dance involving a chain formed as dancers hold hands, moving along in the leader’s path. A textile installation by Colette Balcaen and three Metis culture-inspired beaded articles of clothing by Pascal Jaouen will be on exhibit at la Maison des artistes visuels. A fourth beaded piece will be featured alongside Sarah Houle’s music video by Metis band Ghostkeeper at Plug In ICA. The relationship between Balcaen, Jaouen, and Houle through their participation in the Farandole exhibition creates a link among them while also highlighting the larger historical relationship that continues to exist between Metis and French cultures. The result is a modern meditation on the sometimes cyclical relationship of collaboration, appropriation, and inspiration in contemporary artistic production surrounding Metis culture.
