In the context of its program of cultural exchanges between France and Manitoba, the Alliance Française du Manitoba, in partnership with the Maison des artistes visuels francophones and Plug In ICA, is happy to invite you to the launch of an artistic project, which will link Pascal Jaouen, embroiderer and fashion designer (France) and Colette Balcaen, visual artist (Manitoba).
The theme of this creation project is the intersection of Manitoban Métis textile tradition and contemporary creation. The project aims to emphasize Métis traditional textile know-how, and to take it out of its traditional context and engage it in a contemporary context and in a multidisciplinary artistic dimension.
There will be two artistic discipline explored:
1 – Fashion.
Pascal Jaouen, embroider and fashion designer from France, will be entrusted to create works in collaboration with skilled Manitoban artisans. The actual creation of several outfits will take place in winter 2010 and spring 2011.
2 – Visual Arts.
Colette Balcaen, a French-speaking Manitoban artist, will develop an installation art project. She will work in collaboration with skilled Manitoban artisans.
The works created will be exhibited in Winnipeg (September 2011), in France and elsewhere Canada.
During the evening, Pascal Jaouen and Colette Balcaen will each present their own work and will talk about their creation process.
